Gumroad and why I'm leaving
I've been selling on Gumroad for years at this point. I've had my disagreements with them here and there...
A bit of backstory first.
I've been selling on Gumroad for years at this point. I've had my disagreements with them here and there when it comes to their payment provider-enforced policy on anything "Mature" or "Adult-oriented," and especially their response to and handling of that situation.
Back when all this started, Gumroad left me out in the cold. As far as I heard from others making products similar to mine, that seems to have been the norm. They were unable and/or unwilling to provide us with any information regarding what was going to be allowed to stay, what would be de-listed, and when this would happen. Eventually, things calmed down somewhat, and I was lucky not to have my stuff affected by this; others weren't as lucky.
What happened now
Ever since I've been active on their platform, I've been dealing with their lack of transparency and their strange handling of payouts. The final straw was when they increased the minimum account balance required for payouts on my account to $100. As far as I could tell by going through the emails I received from them, this change was unannounced.
I find it disgraceful at best to treat other people, especially independent creators who helped make their platform what it is, the way they have here. When I buy an asset on Gumroad, I assume that the money I pay will, in large part, go to the creator whose work I'm supporting. Their fee increases have already done a lot of damage to this relationship.
Starting out doing this kind of freelance work isn't easy. Getting into this space isn't easy.
I'm sure for many smaller creators, this $100 minimum payout would be an outright deal breaker.
Luckily, Gumroad isn't the only platform in this space... which nicely leads me to my next point.
Furality and the Future
I have spent the last while working on this website, alongside planning for the eventual transition away from Gumroad that comes with it. I'm now at a point where I can happily report that this will be happening in time for Furality.
I need to clarify something from the very start here: No matter what platform you bought one of my assets on, I will make sure you retain access to it.
Furthermore, my new file distribution strategy will ensure you have access to everything no matter where you bought it from, all in the same place.
Once I have finished preparing and setting up everything, you will be able to verify your purchase on my Discord and gain access to the most up-to-date version of my assets there, whether that is via a Gumroad license key or some other automated proof of purchase.
The goal is to unify your library of my assets and to give me one central place to keep everything up to date and address issues.
Closing thoughts
I will keep my Gumroad around as long as they'll have me. However, once I have an alternative platform set up, the prices there will be increased both to compensate for their increased fees and to encourage people to purchase on the new site. I hope to have the verification process that grants you access to your assets fully automated, with manual intervention only necessary if there's an issue or irregularity.
I will also keep direct file downloads available from the marketplace platform you bought my assets on. Depending on the update frequency, those files may, however, be slightly outdated.
With that said, I hope you enjoyed your read and your stay on my new site so far!
I hope to have this, and possibly even Furality-themed add-ons for some of my assets, ready in time for the convention. See you there!
